Pirates Rally to Save Tall Ship Shawnee

Supporters dressed as pirates rallied this weekend in solidarity with a Newport Beach shipwright who has been battling the city over a boat restoration project in his backyard.

Dennis Holland has been restoring the 1916, 72-foot Shawnee at his West Bay home since 2006. But neighbors have complained about the towering boat in the residential area and the city has ordered him to move the boat off his property by April 30.

On Saturday afternoon, the festive protesters gathered below the Ferris wheel at Balboa Fun Zone and chanted “Save the Shawnee.” Some supporters came from hundreds of miles away to wave signs stating, “Don’t let mediocre minds destroy a great ship.” The group cited the Shawnee’s historical significance as their reason for gathering.

Holland, who is in remission from prostate cancer and sees the ship restoration as a form of therapy, said he doesn’t know what will happen after April 30. Orange County Superior Judge Gregory Munoz issued a preliminary injunction ordering that the ship be removed from the Holiday Road home by that date. After it, Holland could incur fines of as much as $1,000 a day or possible jail time.

Since 2006, Holland has been restoring the ketch. He estimates that he’ll need at least another three years to complete the project. Prior to that, he spent 12 years building from scratch the Pilgrim, a 118-foot, 1770 schooner replica that now sails as the Star of Dana Point, though he resided in Costa Mesa at the time.

The grog be bottled in 1730, n' lined with coconut fiber n' sugar cane, filled with145 proof rum to the neck of the bottle, then the neck be filled with water n' two table spoons of lime juice. After the rum be aged 281 years, it turns to a 186 proof, strong enough that it numb yar teeth to pull them out without feeling a thing. The most amazing rum ever, yarrrr!

What started out as a quick look around turned into 6 hours of education about treasure hunting from the land n' sea. If ye be on the mid-Altantic seaboard, then visit this fine museum. It's free to all treaure lovin' souls.

Sir Francis Drake's Sunken Fleet Found

Remains of the famed English sailor reportedly lie somewhere in Panama's Portobelo Bay, where an expedition backed by Pat Croce has identified four-century-old shipwreck remains as being from from Drake's 1596 fleet.

Drake was buried at sea, supposedly inside a lead coffin, to keep the Spaniards who hated him from finding the body. Drake's two ships, the "Elizabeth" (named after the queen who knighted Drake) and the "Delight" then were scuttled by their crews in Portobelo Bay.

Drake harassed Spanish shipping for decades and was the first English sailor to circumnavigate the globe. Burnt ships' timbers, believed to be from the Drake ships, were discovered earlier this month in Panama.

Speilberg loves pirates, so he has enlisted Pete Jackson to help him craft the WW2 era comic book into a 3D animation. The story be based on comic series by Belgian artist Herge. Tintin, a young journalist buys a model tallship named the Unicorn, based on a 17th century treasure ship captained by Sir Francis Haddock and attached by Red Rackham the pirate. There is a good ship battle between the two ships. The movie has been getting good review, but I haven't seen it yet.
